Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Are YOU at risk?

  • If you are a woman over 40 years old, your chance of dying of heart disease is 1 out of 2.

  • 64% of women who die of a cardiovascular event didn't even know they had plaque in their artery wall.

  • If you are a man over 40 years old, your chance of dying of heart disease is 2 out of 3.

  • Over 75% of heart attacks that occur are caused by a blockage that is not able to be detected by a standard stress test or heart catheterization.

  • 2,200 people die every day in this country due to cardiovascular disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. How do you know if you’re at risk? Dr. Eric Goulder at the Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center of Central Ohio says it best, “You are guilty of having arterial disease until you are proven innocent. So let's find out!"

Am I at risk for developing a heart attack or a stroke?

Heart disease and a healthy lifestyle are not always mutually exclusive. Even if you exercise, eat well, and maintain a healthy weight, you could still have asymptomatic disease.

A traditional examination by a cardiologist will use the risk factor analysis approach. This process will review your cholesterol levels, blood pressure, tobacco use, diabetes status, and family history of heart disease. While all these factors contribute to an accurate picture of your cardiovascular health, it will not look for evidence of disease in your arteries.

This standard risk factor approach does not give you the precision results of a 20 minute ultrasound. A CIMT is a non-invasive ultrasound examination that looks for disease in the arteries. This procedure allows for a personalized approach to your care.

Do you want to wait that long to know if you have arterial disease?

Waiting for any ailment to reach 70% does not sound comforting. Why wait until you’re certain of the problem, when you can find out now whether or not you have mild asymptomatic disease that can be stopped and reversed? The Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center of Central Ohio is geared toward preventative health care that begins with a non-invasive look for mild, asymptomatic disease, and follows up with a tailored plan of care. With a powerful guarantee that you will never have a heart attack or stroke on our watch!

With a simple, non-invasive ultrasound, you can find out your risk!

At the Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center of Central Ohio, we have the technology to see and measure the thickening of your artery walls and any plaque buildup that may be occurring. This efficient, 20 minute ultrasound of your neck is called a Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Test (CIMT) and can provide peace of mind, allowing you to know your disease status.

What will I learn from a CIMT?

A CIMT will provide information for three major attributes, the thickness of the lining of the carotid arteries, the presence and quality of plaque buildup, and the arterial age of the arteries.

  • To a detail of 2/10 of a millimeter, the CIMT will measure the thickness of the lining of your carotid arteries. A thicker than average lining significantly increases your chance of having a cardiovascular event.

  • If plaque is present, that increases your risk of having a cardiovascular event over a 10 year period by as high as 40%.

  • If the age of your arteries is 5 years older than your current age, that suggests you have cholesterol and inflammation building up in your artery wall.

If I’ve had a Carotid Artery Scan or a Stress Test with good results, I already know my risk, right?

The current standard of care in our country often waits until someone has a heart attack or stroke to determine that they are at risk. The carotid duplex scan, usually performed at a hospital or mobile scanning service, looks at the blood flow through the artery. However, this arterial blood flow doesn’t start to drop off until the blockage is over 70%. A stress test also measures the same amount of blockage, only over 70%.

A New Standard of Care

The Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Test is:

  • Non-invasive

  • Affordable (only $285!)

  • Radiation free

  • Painless and easy

  • No need to disrobe (we are looking at the arteries in your neck)

  • Approved by The American Heart Association over 20 years ago as safe, reliable, and repeatable.

Stop guessing and start testing!

With access to such powerful diagnostics, at an affordable price, there’s no reason not to be tested. It could save your life!

Included in each CIMT appointment is a 30 minute consultation with board-certified, BaleDoneen-certified cardiologist, Dr. Eric Goulder. This consultation begins with a brief overview of the causes of atherosclerosis and how inflammation plays a role in the development of atherosclerotic plaque. This plaque can build up in the lining of the artery wall, and poses the risk of rupturing and causing a heart attack or stroke.

Following the CIMT will be the consultation. Dr. Eric Goulder will personally review the results of this test with you and answer any questions you may have. If an issue has been found, he will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan.

For only $265, you can know your risk and work towards optimal health for a lifetime. This simple test could save your life!
